Former Yoakum city manager Al Veselka is returning to the position on an interim basis.

The Yoakum City Council named Veselka to the interim position during special session Monday.

Veselka will serve in the job he held once held for eight years after current city manager Calvin Cook retires at the end of July.

Velselka was previously Yoakum city manager from May 1994 until January 2002. He had also been city manager in Robstown and in Taft.

"He was nice enough to accept the position on a month-to-month basis until we find a full-time city manager," said Yoakum Mayor Annie Rodriguez.

"We have hired a search firm and they will be looking for an applicant for us," said the mayor.

Strategic Government Resources of Keller was hired by the council to perform the city manager search.

Veselka will join the city staff on July 18 and work with Cook during a two-week transition period.

Cook, who is retiring, began his career with the city of Yoakum in 1968. He became city manager in 2002.
