Area celebrates Fourth of July

Fourth of July activities are planned throughout the area beginning Friday. Here are some of the events planned in the Crossroads area:


SHINER - Crossroads residents are invited to start celebrating Independence Day early at the 32nd annual Half Moon Holidays, Friday and Saturday at Green-Dickson Park in Shiner. The good times, and good food, start Friday with an "Anything Goes" chili cook-off at 2 p.m. followed by a youth chili cook-off at 3 p.m. The pie contest turn-in is also at 3 p.m., followed by a 5 p.m. judging and auction at 7 p.m. Friday night caps off with music in the park by Southern Express from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. Saturday is full of activities, including all-day events like the car show, tractor show, washer tournament, softball tournament, water slide, children's games and pony rides. There will also be a biergarten, food and craft booths. The day kicks off with a 5K fun run at 7:30 a.m. The annual parade through downtown Shiner starts at 10:30 a.m. Cook-off events begin at 10 a.m. with beans, followed by chicken at 11:30 a.m., giblet rice at 1 p.m., pork ribs at 2:30 p.m. and brisket at 4:30 p.m. A youth fishing tournament is planned for 1:30 to 4 p.m., with no entry fee and prizes in two age groups, 10 and under and 11 to 17. Shiner will be also rocking all afternoon with the Ross Brunner Band from 1 to 2:30 p.m., Texas Duet from 3 to 4:30 p.m., Bill Pekar from 6 to 9 p.m. and Los Kolaches from 9:45 p.m. to midnight. PORT LAVACA - Roger Creager will play at Port Lavaca's annual Doin' it on the Deck concert. Gate opens at 6 p.m. Friday at Nautical Landings Marina. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Call 361-552-2287 for more information.


PORT O'CONNOR - The Port O'Connor Fireworks Show is scheduled for 9 p.m. Saturday at Kingfisher Front Beach Park. The event is free.

EDNA - Jackson County Fourth of July, Saturday, Brackenridge Park and Campground, Daytime activities: Antique Tractor Show, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the grassy area directly in front of the Harry Hafernick Recreation Center; Antique Tractor Parade, 3 p.m.; bounce house and inflatable water slide. Vendors will provide cotton candy, drinks, sausage wraps, and funnel cakes, sno cones, among others. Fireworks show sponsored by the Lavaca-Navidad River Authority begins at dark. Admission and parking is free; tickets for bounce house and water slide can be purchased on location. For more information, call 361-782-5456.

AUSTWELL-TIVOLI - The Austwell Volunteer Fire Department will host its Fourth of July fundraiser on Saturday. The celebration kicks off at 1 p.m. with a parade of golf carts at the Austwell Park Pavilion. A fish fry will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at $7 a plate. Plates come with fish, beans, coleslaw, hush puppies and tea. A raffle for a barbecue pit will be held and there's a dance from 7 p.m. to midnight with music provided by Double J. Productions. An auction will take place at 8 p.m. with fireworks at 10 p.m. There will also be a dance contest for children and grito contest for adults.


POINT COMFORT - The Point Comfort Independence Day celebration is scheduled for Sunday. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. with a kiddie wagon parade, and food and drink booths will be set up at the city park. Fireworks start around 9 p.m.


CUERO - City of Cuero annual fireworks show will be Monday, from 6:30 to 11 p.m., live music by Tommy Schlein, will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m; fireworks at 9 p.m, all at the Cuero Municipal Park.

CUERO - Grace Episcopal Church Family Fun Carnival will be from 9:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at Cuero Municipal Park. Young Patriots parade, concessions, children's activities, raffle; 11:30 a.m., watermelon seed spittin' contest, noon, hula hoop contest. Proceeds benefit Keep Cuero Beautiful and the Grace Episcopal Church New Priest Fund.

GOLIAD - Coleto Creek Power will put on a firework presentation at 9 p.m. on July 4 at 365 Coleto Park Road in Fannin. Doors open at 7 p.m. for parking, the fireworks will begin at 9 p.m. There is an $8 entry fee for non-Goliad County residents. To get the fee waived, you must present proof of county residence.

WOODSBORO - The Woodsboro Lion's Club will hold its Fourth of July celebration at Woodsboro Veterans Memorial Park, formerly known as the square, on Monday. The free celebration kicks off with a parade around the square at 10 a.m. Food and arts and crafts will be available, as well as a water slide and moon jumps for the kids and other games.

BAYSIDE - A parade at 4 p.m. Monday will go down Third Street, toward the end of town and down to the bay front to the park. From 4 to 8 p.m., there will be a pot luck and free food and refreshments. The night will end with a firework display over the water.


REFUGIO - The Fourth of July celebration has been postponed until Labor Day because of the county burn ban. The free celebration will include fireworks, food and arts and crafts vendors, games, a jalapeno and pickle eating contest. A new time is being proposed for the start of the celebration, which will be held at 245 Fairgrounds Road.
