The St. Joseph girls golf team got a preview of what they could see if they make it to the TAPPS Class 5A state tournament.
And it was obvious they liked what they saw.
The Lady Flyers finished in second place with a team score of 369 on Monday, led by Maddy Buhler's round of 81 at Wild Flower Country Club in Temple.
But the highlight of the day came from freshman Chloe Velasco, who nailed a hole-in-one on the par-3 hole 16.
Her shot was from 155 yards away and into the wind, said Lady Flyers coach Jack Lee. Velasco finished with a score of 85 on the day.
For her efforts, Velasco was honored in front of the crowd after the event.
Overall, the wind was a major factor for all of the teams, Lee said.
"It blew like crazy," he said.
The results were encouraging for the Lady Flyers, who are playing their first year at the TAPPS 5A level after spending several years a level lower. They earned several trips to the Class 4A state tournament.
For the Lady Flyers, Bethany Hickner and Kim Chavarria each shot 101, and Kaitlyn Cantu shot a 111.
The Lady Flyers finished second behind the defending TAPPS 5A champion Dallas Ursuline Academy, which finished with a team score of 341.
Still, Lee is happy with the result, and is looking for a return trip in April when the state tournament rolls around.
"We're encouraged with this," he said. "We're looking forward to hopefully coming back here."
