More than a dozen area bands will do battle at Yorktown's inaugural Fools Folly Festival with the winner of the competition taking the stage again later this year at Western Days-Ziegfest.

The Battle of the Bands in Yorktown's city park, 141 S. Riedel St., will feature a diverse lineup from alternative rock to country and a few genres in between.

In addition to kicking off the musical portion of Western Days-Ziegfest in October, the winning band will be part of the festival's statewide and national marketing campaign. It will also take home a $250 cash prize.

The April 2 festival will be the first for Yorktown, already home of the long-running Yorktown Western Days-Ziegfest.

"The Fools Folly Festival is a result of a collaborative idea, originating from local business owners and the Yorktown Western Days Association Board of Directors," said Melissa Armstrong, executive director of the association. "Both entities feel the local and regional economies can support another annual event in Yorktown."

"In an effort to highlight and promote our region's many talented artists, the Battle of the Bands came to life and the Fools Folly Festival followed," she said.

In addition to the Battle of the Bands, the festival will include numerous craft and food vendors and cold beverages.

Craft vendor space is available without electricity for $25 per space.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Yorktown Chamber of Commerce and the Yorktown Western Days Association, both nonprofit organizations.

The Battle of the Bands winner will be decided primarily by the public's response to the artists' performance, with the Yorktown Western Days Association Board of Directors having final approval, explained Armstrong.

The Yorktown Western Days Association Board of Directors will base their final approval on stage presence, crowd response, entertainment capabilities and the value to be added to the Western Days-Ziegfest, said Armstrong.

Please note: Absolutely no coolers or outside food or beverages will be permitted. Lawn chairs are encouraged. For more information, call 361-564-2661.
