Workers struck a gas line near Torres Elementary School shortly after 9 a.m. Friday.
The Victoria Fire Department, whose station No. 3 is located next to the school at 4208 Lone Tree Road, responded quickly and determined the school did not need to be evacuated, the school district's communication specialist, Diane Boyett said.
The workers, who were contracted by the school, were installing a storm drain when they struck the gas line, Boyett said.
The wind was blowing gas away from the school, Boyett said, but an ambulance was on standby as a precaution.
By 9:50 a.m., workers from CenterPoint Energy had repaired the leak.
