The University of Houston-Victoria softball team's doubleheader against LSU-Alexandria got off to an odd start on Saturday.

With a runner on first and one out in the top of the first inning of Game 1, Alexandria's Jessica Pocorello came to the plate and saw a few pitches before UHV head coach Keri Lambeth came out of the dugout.

"Is that on the approved bat list?" she asked the umpire.

Turns out it wasn't, and Pocorello was sent back to her dugout. It was scored a strikeout, but both coaches and the umpire crew spent the next 15 minutes discussing what had happened.

Ultimately, the decision was made not to eject Pocorello from the game.

The bat in question, plus another, were removed from the visitor's dugout and placed at the scorer's table.

After that excitement, UHV went on to take the game 4-1, thanks to some solid pitching and timely offense.

Starter Dawn Villegas allowed just the one run on three hits, while striking out seven and walking six.

The mix of strikeouts and walks left little for the Jaguars defense to do, but they responded when called upon.

At the plate, the Jaguars scored single runs in the second and third before tacking on a couple of insurance runs in the sixth.

Tara Williams and Shorty O'Bryant each had two hits and an RBI in the game to lead UHV.

The Jaguars also stole five bases in the game, with Kori Kocian taking two.

In the second game, the Jaguars jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after two innings and never looked back.

Emily Bergstrom was successful with a much different style than Villegas, using offspeed pitches to keep Alexandria off balance.

She pitched six shutout innings in the 11-0 win, giving up just three hits, walking none and striking out seven.

The Jaguars slowly piled up runs throughout the game, until Tara Williams came to the plate in the bottom of the sixth with her team up 7-0.

She ran the count full before driving the ball over the left field fence for a walk-off grand slam.

She had 5 RBIs in the game, while Porsha Ramos went 3 for 4 with three RBIs. Allison Hinton and Kristina Droz each went 2 for 3.

Over the two games against Alexandria, Williams was 3 for 7 with a home run and six RBIs.

The Jaguars are now 20-10 on the season after taking three of four games over the weekend home stand.
