A 33-year-old Victoria man who was left severely beaten on the side of a road is on life support in a San Antonio hospital.

Mario Vasquez was left for dead on the side of Farm-to-Market Road 239, about a mile west of U.S. Highway 77 on Sunday afternoon, said Refugio County Sheriff's Office Investigator Martin Diaz-DeLeon.

Two passersby saw Vasquez and reported the injury. When deputies arrived, they found Vasquez semi-conscious, delusional and not able to sit or stand, Diaz-DeLeon said.

"He was badly beaten in the head area," he said.

Investigators believe the assault was gang-related and that there may be several people involved, Diaz-DeLeon added.

Vasquez was transported to Citizens Medical Center and was later flown to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, he added.

Vasquez appeared to be making some progress Tuesday afternoon, but was still on life support, he said.

The office's investigation shows Vasquez may have been on the side of the road for about three hours.

Vasquez's immediate family was not at home Wednesday afternoon, but Roberto Luna, the boyfriend of Vasquez's mother, Manuela, was at home and said the family was at the hospital in San Antonio.

"We don't know what happened," he said. "She doesn't feel up to talking. She's feeling bad right now."

No arrests have been made.
