Interior design and renovation work earned one Victoria company recognition on the national level.
American Builders and Contractors presented Victoria's Custom Interiors with the 2010 National Excellence in Construction Award for work on a new nurse's station and addition for Gonzales Healthcare Systems in Gonzales.
Carol Ann Scherer, owner and president of Custom Interiors, said it was an honor to take part in awards ceremony in Orlando, Fla.
"It felt like it was the Oscars for construction," she said of the Feb. 22 event. "I am very honored. Very humbled by the experience."
Throughout the project, San Marcos' Stokes Construction subcontracted Custom Interiors to complete the carpet, flooring, a nurse's station and 22 patient rooms, Scherer said.
"From beginning to end, it was a four-week project for us," she said. "Our realm was the finish-out."
Patients remained in the hospital throughout the project, Scherer said, explaining the companies involved took extra measures to keep patients safe, comfortable and away from construction areas.
"The original flooring had asbestos," she said. "This was an extreme job and we wanted the end product to be somewhere where patients felt at home, instead of just a sterile environment."
This was the first such competition Custom Interiors entered and it was a detailed process, Scherer said, explaining it involved letters of recommendation and close documentation of the project. It was also the first time in the Victoria chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors' 25 years that a Victoria-area participant won such recognition, Kathy Autry, president of the local chapter, said in a news release.
Scherer attributed much of her company's win to the others involved in the project, TSG Architects, Stokes Construction and Gonzales Healthcare Systems.
"Without the architect drawing the project, we don't have a project to do," she said. "Everyone has to work together. It was very much a team effort."
