The same faces will make up the Victoria school board this upcoming school year.

Voters elected incumbents Lou Svetlik, District 3 trustee, and the Rev. Kevin VanHook, District 1 trustee, to another term.

Svetlik will serve three years, while VanHook will serve two years - the remainder of the unexpired term he filled after the August death of school board member James Murphy Sr., said school board president Tami Keeling.

"I'm grateful to have the opportunity to serve on this board. It's a great board and certainly a great school district," VanHook said, while picking up campaign signs Saturday night. "I want to serve the district well, and be of course, accessible ... I certainly want to see VISD involved in the community much more in the next two years."

Svetlik, who will be starting his fourth term on the school board, thanked the people who took the time to vote in what is historically a low-turnout election.

"I think most of the community can recognize that there's been significant progress in our school district," Svetlik said. "We'll continue to work for the needs of our kids and listen to our constituents so that our schools reflect the values and expectations of our community."

Svetlik said he was disappointed in the low voter turnout, which was just 4 percent.

"I hope people understand and realize that our school district is something that needs attention. There are so many positive things taking place in VISD right now. Our kids are doing really well, and the community is really energized."

Svetlik said his energies this term will probably be focused on maintaining equity in the east and west learning communities and continuing to efficiently spend tax dollars.

Meanwhile, VanHook braced for what could be a trying year in education budgets.

"I don't anticipate the state cutting funds, but in case that happens, I want to be responsible in helping the team, which is the board, ... keep making the right choices for our children."
