Many commuters want to know when the construction in downtown Victoria will finish. Answer: when the wind stops.
Main Street construction has been delayed because of excessive winds - 20 mph and more. Tom Schmidt, lead contractor of Urban Engineering, said the wind is the reason for the delay, and putting down asphalt in extreme conditions can get messy.
"It will get over everything when the wind blows," Schmidt said.
He added that the first layer, or seal coat, of asphalt needs to be sprayed. Then the hotmix needs to cover it to seal the pavement.
"This is no time to make a mess. After all this time, we're not going to rush it," he said. Construction has been delayed one week already, and Schmidt is not certain when it will resume.
Schmidt said it was a joint decision by him, the city, and the contractor, but that ultimately it's the city's call to resume construction.
