An 18-year-old Victoria man was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance Tuesday night in the same area police were searching for two men who evaded them on foot after a car chase.

The man, Eddie Lopez, was arrested by Officer Jason Turner, who was in the area participating in the search.

Police Lt. Jason Cross said Lopez matched one of the descriptions of the two men police were seeking. Lopez also was walking one block away from the scene in the direction the two men, who evaded police, were headed.

The police report said Lopez admitted to having cocaine. Lopez was taken into custody and arraigned Wednesday morning.

Police Tuesday night had been searching for two men after they led authorities on a short vehicular chase that began about 10:15 p.m.

The gold Mitsubishi Galant entered Stroman Middle School property, smashed through a fence and then stopped in a neighborhood east of Stroman.

The men fled the car and ran. A woman, 35-year-old Erin Lathen, stayed in the vehicle.

Cross said Lathen later claimed the vehicle was hers.

Lathen told police she was in another location when the men tried to leave in her car, according to Cross.

However, the police report stated no car-jacking occurred.

Cross also said a rifle was found in the car.

Police continued to search for the men Tuesday night, and Cross said they had leads on two suspects.
