UHV's Longoria named pre-season All-American

University of Houston-Victoria outfielder John Longoria has been named to the NAIA 2012 Baseball Preseason All-American Team.

Longoria, a senior from Spring, was named the Association of Independent Institutions Player of the Year last season and was one of 17 players selected for preseason honors by the NAIA Baseball Coaches Association All-America Selection Committee.

"He is a great leader and a good example for the rest of the team," UHV head baseball coach Terry Puhl said in a news release. "His leadership abilities will be counted on heavily this year."

Longoria, who also played first base, hit a team-leading .374 with 70 hits at bats.

Longoria also led the Jaguars with 50 RBIs, 119 total bases, four triples and 23 doubles, which tied the school record held by Austin Kent.

Longoria finished third on the team with six home runs and 38 runs scored.

Longoria earned NAIA All-America honorable mention recognition before playing for the Victoria Generals of the Texas Collegiate League last summer.
