Jaguars begin fall practice

University of Houston-Victoria coach Terry Puhl will see a lot of new faces when the Jaguars begin fall baseball practice 3 p.m. Monday at Riverside Stadium.

The Jaguars return five starters, but only three will be on hand when UHV starts to prepare for the 2012 season.

Outfielders John Longoria and Tyler Steiner, infielders Cory Hulsey and Ryan Suescun, and catcher Brandon Bohannon are back from last year's squad, which finished 31-25 and lost in the Association of Independent Institutions tournament.

But Steiner won't participate in fall drills to preserve a semester of eligibility, and Bohannon broke his ankle and won't be back until the spring at the earliest.

The lone starting pitcher returning from last season's rotation is Cory Carter.

"The main thing is to get acquainted with the pitchers," Puhl said. "I also want to work on swings with the freshmen.

"I know they've been working out on their own, but I have to see what kind of shape their in."

The Jaguars will practice daily throughout the fall semester with the exception of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Among the freshmen reporting Monday will be Cuero graduate Andrew Thibodeaux and Yoakum graduate Justin Boening.

UHV will scrimmage Alvin Community College in a doubleheader at Riverside Stadium on Tuesday, Oct. 25.

The Jaguars' 2012 schedule will include NCAA opponents St. Edward's, St. Mary's, Incarnate Word, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and Texas A&M-Kingsville, and NAIA power LSU-Shreveport.

"We play a tough schedule so we have to be ready," Puhl said. "I've got to get to know these guys and find out what they can do."
