Sure B.E.T. seeks mentors for students

Sure B.E.T. is looking for a few good mentors.

The organization hopes to grow its mentor base to help more students throughout the Victoria school district, said Lanell Mantey, executive director of the Victoria Business and Education Coalition, Sure B.E.T.'s parent company.

About 200 mentors are already registered, she said, but the organization will take as many people as it can get. If more mentors join than current students, she said more students can join.

The time commitment is 30 minutes per week, Mantey said, and mentors can help with either math or reading. More important than the subject matter, however, is the moral support mentors offer.

"Many of these kids ... don't have that well-rounded support from family that they need," she explained. "Here, they can build relationships with students to give them the encouragement to continue their education."
