In April 2010, the concept of an annual festival dubbed "Bootfest" was realized. And planning began for a festival that would return year after year in October.

Such a festival is fitting to bring in cooler weather and celebrate the same way other October festivals do. These festivals proffer fun and carry some theme reminiscent of the town or area where they are presented.

We think Victoria needed a cool festival. Bootfest ought to be Victoria's fall festival, and it should bring smiles and fun this weekend on Friday and Saturday.

More than a year in the planning, the city certainly has learned from planning this first event, which it hopes will remain in the years to come.

We hope and think it will go well. We know many don't like the name of the festival, but as some say, "What's in a name?" The name is not important - the event is the important element.

For example, Austin City Limits has no particular attractiveness about it. We can glean that the event is within the city, correct? Of is it the other way around? When Woodstock occurred, who would have guessed that the name of the event was the same as the nearby city? So we shouldn't judge a book by its cover.

Bootfest will feature a variety of foods, fireworks, boot making demonstrations and a Radio Disney kid's corral.

Texas music by Josh Abbott, Wade Bowen, JB & the Moonshine Band and Whiskey Myers are headlined.

Other music artists performing near downtown Victoria where the Bootfest will happen include Dr. Moto Band, Eric G Band, Johnny Ray Barefield with Hit 'n' Run, and The Jack Motley Band. These bands will be at the corner of Forrest and DeLeon streets.

A new establishment - Greek's 205 Bar, at 205 E. Constitution - also intends to open its doors 4 p.m. Friday.

"We invite everyone at Bootfest over," said George Charkalis, owner of the business.

We think downtown Victoria is really beautiful now. And Bootfest this weekend will brighten it up with tons of entertainment and fun.

This is a good start for our festival. See you there.
