AARP Chapter hosts meeting

AARP Chapter 829-Victoria met Oct. 25 for its regular meeting with Dr. Efren Diaz DeLeon, president, presiding.
Betty Lott, vice president, led the group in the invocation, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. Flag and the Texas Flag.
DeLeon welcomed everyone and introduced the speaker for the day, O.C. Garza, information specialist for the city of Victoria. Garza told the group about the many things happening in Victoria, from the great success of the Bootfest, to the progress being made on the many street projects in the city. He invited everyone to drive past the new Caterpillar plant. The hazardous waste program is set to begin Nov. 1; call 1-800-449-7587 to schedule a pick-up. The recycle program is set to begin Feb. 1.
New officers to serve in 2012 are Dr. Efren Diaz DeLeon, president; Betty Lott, vice president; co-treasurers Ann Carver and Pam Carver; and Yvonne Smith, secretary.
Dues are $5 per year and are being collected for 2012.
There will be a gathering to support a cure for diabetes on Nov. 12 at Riverside Park, volunteers will be needed.
The next meeting will be the annual Holiday Party on Nov. 29. There will not be a meeting in December.
