EL CAMPO - A woman struck by a freight train Oct. 22 in El Campo died Wednesday at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.

Nancy Barnes, 28, was taken by helicopter to the Houston hospital after she and Willie Gonzalez, 44, were hit by a Kansas City Southern Railway train carrying cargo, about 7:21 p.m. near the 100 block of Farenholt Street.

Barnes and Gonzales were walking on the train tracks when they were hit by the train.

El Campo Police Chief Terry Stanphill said Barnes remained on life support for several days, but was pronounced dead at 3:57 p.m. Wednesday, by Dr. Leslie Reddell of Memorial Hermann Hospital.

Gonzalez suffered minor injuries at the time of the accident.
