About 100 acres burn in grass fire

Sept. 3, 2011 at 4:03 a.m.

Goliad Volunteer Fire Department firefighters drive through the remnants of a grassfire to ensure it is completely extinguished in Weesatche on a property off of Highway 119 just south of the Goliad and DeWitt county line on Saturday. Goliad VFD Fire Chief Alonzo Morales said between 75 to 100 acres burned. The cause is believed to be embers from a controlled brushfire the land owner's son had started the night before. In total, seven Volunteer Fire Departments responded to put out the fire which was extinguished within an hour.

GOLIAD - Between 75 and 100 acres burned on State Highway 119 near the Goliad County line about 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

There were no reported injuries.

Goliad Fire Chief Alonzo Morales said the occupant of a property burned a brush pile Friday and the wind may have caused the blaze to reignite.

Morales said the occupant who started the fire was issued a citation by the Goliad County Sheriff's Office because a burn ban remains in effect.

The name of the person who received the ticket was not disclosed.

The chief said 45 firefighters controlled the flames within an hour.
