VC board accepts Welder's resignation

The Victoria College Board of Trustees at its regular meeting Monday accepted the resignation of one of its members.

Roger Welder submitted his letter of resignation Sept. 1, as the Victoria businessman prepares for his new role on the University of Houston Board of Regents.

"It was a great privilege to serve with that group," said Welder, who was not at the meeting. "It's a great institution, and I enjoyed it a lot and will miss my time there."

Board President Ron Walker called the agenda item a sad one before the board unanimously approved Welder's resignation.

"Our only consolation is we can maybe work with him in the future," Walker said.

Welder echoed that, saying his service on the board since 2006 will help him in his endeavor with UH.

Gov. Rick Perry in August appointed Welder to the UH board, which had been vacant of a Victorian representative since 2008.

The VC personnel committee will meet soon to decide on a person to recommend to fill Welder's seat, which expires in 2014.

The committee will most likely offer the board one recommendation, and if approved by the board at an open meeting, he or she will serve the remainder of Welder's term.
