Advocate editorial board opinion: Loop 463 bound to be a safe freeway

We are pleased we will have two overpasses on Loop 463 at the intersections of Salem and Mockingbird Lane. Both will be completed in 2013.

One of those intersections is near East High School, and its completion will make the area there much safer. Both intersections have records of fatalities and serious injuries.

Now, we hear of a possible third overpass at Airline Road from Randy Bena, area engineer for the Texas Department of Transportation.

Roughly, through Proposition 12 that passed in 2007, $11 to $12 million for the approximately $13 million project may become available in the next couple of months, according to Bena.

If the money comes through, Bena said the district would make up the rest of the cost from its discretionary fund.

The desire is to have a freeway standard from Salem all the way to U.S. Highway 59 South. Bena said ending the freeway standard on Loop 463 after Mockingbird Lane would put extra pressure on the intersection at Airline and the loop.

"There was a recent fatality there (Airline and Loop 463)," Bena said.

We think the addition of this third overpass is great. It will serve to increase safety while providing a good transportation route. And we are pleased that this project won't cost the city any further funds.

"I'm for it. We need to grow the city," said Mayor Will Armstrong.

Bena said, "Traffic volume continues to increase, with the development of Caterpillar - truck traffic and employees and the outcropping - other businesses moving there, too. And we already have quite a bit of traffic on Airline," he said.

Once the project is bid, Bena said the construction would take a year to a year-and-a-half to complete.

We applaud our local TxDOT district and its endeavors to make Loop 463 a safe highway and one that will serve the area well.
