Flatonia coach Chris Freytag has been amazed by the improvement he's seen from senior quarterback Colby Mica this season.
"He's just reading defenses so much better," Freytag said. "In our offense, we don't know where we're going to throw the ball. We give the quarterback the option to read the safety or the outside backer.
"He's also gotten much better in his pre-snap reads. A lot of the time he already knows where the ball is going before it's snapped. He's light years ahead."
Mica put his improvement on display in the Bulldogs' 41-40 overtime win over Thrall on Friday night.
Mica helped Flatonia improve to 3-2 on the season was selected as the Class 1A Built Ford Tough Texas High School Player of the Week.
He completed 19 of 31 passes for 306 yards and four touchdowns, the last one coming in overtime.
Mica was the long snapper for Will Bruns' game-winning point after. Mica rushed for 14 times for 117 times and had seven tackles and an interception from his safety position.
Mica, who has a 3.3 GPA, has earned all-district honors in football, basketball, track and field and baseball. He recently helped organize a fundraiser that produced $3,000 for fire victims in Bastrop.
"When Colby is out there, it's like having an extra coach on the field," Freytag said. "And he's always out on the field - even on special teams. I trust him implicitly. He does all of the signal calling on offense and defense. He had a great game. He really did."
