Benavidez Memorial Foundation

The Benavidez Memorial Foundation is raising money to make improvements at the Roy P. Benavidez Memorial Park in Cuero.

The life-size monument of the Medal of Honor recipient was dedicated in 2008 and is located across from Cuero High School on U.S. Highway 87.

In recent years, the foundation has raised money for scholarships, donations to civic organizations and maintenance the monument site.

The fundraising goal is $30,000 to make improvements at the monument park to include a semi-circle of flags representing all branches of the U.S. military.

Benavidez, a master sergeant, was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1981 by President Ronald Reagan for his actions while serving in Vietnam.

His actions, in part, included "his refusal to be stopped despite numerous severe wounds, saved the the lives of at least eight men," according to his citation.
