A 40-year-old inmate in the Victoria County Jail was found hanging in his single-occupancy cell Saturday evening.

The man, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of his next-of-kin, was in an administrative segregation cell and was discovered at 5:54 p.m., according to a press release from the Victoria County Sheriff's Office.

The inmate had not expressed suicidal tendencies during his custody, the release said. He was at the Victoria County Jail as a U.S. Marshal's prisoner.

A note expressing his intention to commit suicide was in the cell, the sheriff's office release said.

Sheriff's jail officers began administering CPR on the inmate before he was transported by ambulance to Citizens Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The release said the investigation, which will include an autopsy, will be conducted by the Sheriff's Office, the U.S. Marshal's Service and the Texas Rangers.
