The Victoria Business and Education Coalition is recognizing mentors who donate their time to work with students in Victoria schools. To find out how to get involved, call VBEC at 361-572-8232.

This week's spotlight mentor is Jena West, a student at the University of Houston-Victoria who mentors a Stroman Middle School student.

What made you decide to be a mentor?

I enjoy helping another child be successful. These children really do need our support and help to feel like they are able to get through their school year.

What do you feel you bring to the students?

I feel I have a gift to share with the students to show them that they to can be successful and plan to go off to college someday, like me.

I feel I bring to the students the information that most are needing, which is that someone cares about them and is willing to take the time out of their day to share with them.

What have you learned by the student, educational system, etc. that has enlightened you?

That we have so much to give and if everyone would share with one student their support, we would have a much more successful group of kids wanting to do good in the community.
