A suspicious package was found in the Walmart parking lot in Port Lavaca on Monday evening.

It turned out to be an empty briefcase.

The Port Lavaca Police Department received a call about 5:25 p.m. that a briefcase had been left in the parking lot, Police Chief James Martinez said.

The police responded and began watching surveillance video to determine where the briefcase came from.

The Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Bureau was called in, and then the Corpus Christi Bomb Squad responded to determine if the package was a threat.

It was determined the briefcase had been left in the parking lot by an elderly Palacios man.

The area of the parking lot where the briefcase was found was cordoned off while the investigation was conducted, Martinez said.

Customers were able to use other entrances to the parking lot and Walmart remained open.
