• Ross Kurtz

• Age: 38

• City/county of residence: Wharton County

• Occupation: Assistant District Attorney

• Political party: Republican

Office Seeking: District Attorney, 329th Judicial District, Wharton County, Texas

1. Why do you want to serve in this position?

Whether serving in our armed forces or prosecuting criminals in our courtrooms, justice has always been my job. I have never represented a criminal in my career - and I never will. As a U.S. Air Force Captain and veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, I learned about leadership, hard work, and dedication to a cause greater than myself. So I am stepping forward again to serve as District Attorney. My pledge to the people of Wharton County is to prosecute those who do harm to our families and community with toughness and tenacity.

2. What qualifies you to serve in this office?

Since 2006, I have been the lead prosecutor for over 60 judge and jury trials, securing convictions for hundreds of violent offenders. I have supervised the intake, indictment, and prosecution of more than 3,000 felony cases, and personally attended more than 70 percent of search warrants conducted by the Narcotics Task Force. Prior to becoming a prosecutor, I was a U.S. Air Force Security Forces Officer in Iraq where I designed and implemented the U.S. Customs program for the entire nation in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Additionally, I led a 125-man security force responsible for the protection of 30,000 personnel.

3. If elected, how will you go about effectively serving your constituents?

It is critical that the District Attorney's office seeks and secures justice for victims of crime, while at the same time being efficient with the tax dollars they have been entrusted with. In my first year handling the budget in the Wharton County DA's office, I was able to cut almost $70,000, or 13 percent, of our total budget while still prosecuting more offenders and getting more convictions than any other Assistant in Wharton County history. As our new District Attorney, I will work tirelessly to continue protecting our families and our tax dollars.
