A Houston man died as the result of a head-on collision Friday morning, north of LaWard.
Christian Brown, 33, of Fresno, fell asleep at the wheel of a tractor-trailer as he was driving north on state Highway 172 near Jackson County Road 439 about 6 a.m., said Department of Public Safety Trooper James Vinson.
Brown's vehicle veered into southbound traffic and collided head-on with a grey Nissan passenger car driven by Juan Campos, 51, of Houston.
Witnesses said the tractor-trailer had left the roadway and gone through a fence, but were unaware that a second vehicle was involved until they heard screaming from a nearby ditch where Campos' Nissan had flipped and landed, Vinson said.
They followed the screaming to Campos' Nissan, which sustained significant damage to the driver's side.
Campos was conscious and talking when Vinson arrived at the scene.
The victim had suffered a compound fracture to his femur and severe internal injuries, Vinson said. And in spite of efforts by emergency service personnel to revive him, Campos died at the scene.
Justice of the Peace Dwayne Taylor pronounced Campos dead.
The wreck remains under investigation. No citations have been issued as of Friday night, Vinson said.
