Sophomores and juniors in the Victoria school district will take the social studies TAKS test on Monday instead of the previously scheduled April 27.
With approval from the Texas Education Agency, the district changed the official TAKS testing day because of a scheduling conflict with the regional track meet.
About 20 students who need to take the TAKS test also qualified for the regional track meet, which UIL scheduled for April 27 - the same day of TAKS testing, said Dionne Hughes, coordinator of assessment and accountability.
To ensure students had the opportunity to take the social studies test and attend the track meet, the district opted to test Monday through Thursday instead of Tuesday through Friday.
Hughes said the district wants to remind students to show up for Monday's test because juniors need to pass the exit-level test in order to graduate. Make-up TAKS exams for juniors won't be available until July, and there are no make-up opportunities for sophomores.
A low participation rate on the exams also hurts the district's Adequate Yearly Progress, which is how the state grades schools each year.
Sophomores, juniors and seniors take the TAKS tests, while third- through ninth-graders take the state's new assessment test, the STAAR.
