Ernesto now a hurricane

Ernesto is now a hurricane.

As of 1 p.m., Air Force hurricane hunters detected maximum sustained winds of 80 mph and the National Weather Service has upgraded the storm to Category 1 hurricane status.

A hurricane warning has also been issued for the island of Cozumel.

Hurricane warnings continue to be in effect for Belize and the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Some additional strengthening is possible before Ernesto reaches the Yucatan Peninsula.
