Six suspected illegal immigrants escaped capture Thursday afternoon at U.S. Highway 59 North and Burroughsville Road after a sheriff’s deputy attempted a traffic stop.
Capt. Herb Tucker, with the Victoria County Sheriff’s Office, said the vehicle was being driven by an Edinburg man, who was arrested. He is being held on suspicion of human smuggling.
Authorities did not continue a search Wednesday afternoon, but patrolled the area frequently looking for the suspected illegal immigrants.
Tucker said the vehicle and passengers were en route to Houston, from the border, when they were stopped at 1:10 p.m. on suspicion of a traffic violation, which Tucker would not specify.
