Don't forget other employees in conversation

Editor, the Advocate:

There has been a lot of conversation concerning police salary adjustments. We should not forget all of the city and county employees.

Department heads, managers and elected officials are duty-bound to recognize turn-over as a weakening element in effectively operated government. Education, certification levels, training, and experience are valuable assets a government employee has to offer the community and the employer. Those valuable employee assets should be compensated fairly. When there are several years with no or low cost of living increases: morale, stress, and frustration can over-ride other positive motivators that helps maintain tenure or better put dedication. As responsible citizens, we should support proper evaluation of salaries and benefits. Pay grade systems, education, training, certification levels and length of service need not only be established but administered evenly and according to policy. Our city and county governments have great employees. Let's work to retain them. Also, keep in mind that low starting salaries hinder hiring top quality candidates for job vacancies.
