Thumbs-up to the staff at DeTar Hospital, fifth floor. My dad fell and broke his left hip on July 4. The concern and care given was great, especially by Amy, the main nurse. Thank you, and God bless to all. Thanks also to the third floor rehab.

Thumbs-down to the right-turn-only lane on 183 South and Highway 59 in Goliad. We now have more traffic, and this lane causes headaches and a long line, sometimes three blocks long. The highway department needs to do a survey on this matter. It should go back to a turn-right or go-straight lane.

Thumbs down to the people who leave their garage sales signs up long after the sale is over. I go to garage sales to save money, not waste my time and gas chasing down sales that don't exist.

Thumbs-up and thank you to Herman Shirley for his service during World War II, including landing on the island of Guadalcanal as a member of the Marine Corps.

Thumbs-up and welcome to all 160 new faculty members working for VISD this year.

Thumbs-up to Zak Covar and other members of the TCEQ, who helped persuade the EPA to revise their decision to give non-attainment status to Matagorda County.

Thumbs-up to Gene's Machines for working on the weekend to repair a little girl's broken leg brace.

Thumbs-down to the late-night partying happening in Presidio La Bahia. It's disappointing to see people disrespect historic sites like this.

Thumbs-down to the increase in violent crimes in Victoria for the first half of 2012.
