Goliad County Commissioners decided not to consolidate the justice of the peace positions, despite the resignation from the Precinct 1 judge.

After Judge Sylvia Valdez resigned in early July, two years ahead of schedule, County Judge David Bowman said the court looked into consolidating the positions to save money.

On Monday, however, the court voted to fill the position in the general election. Judge Steve Kennedy, Precinct 2 justice of the peace, will assume Valdez's duties until a new judge is elected.

The court also discussed the effective tax rate for 2012. The tax assessor, Anna Lopez, calculated the rate at 64.84 cents per $100 valuation, compared to 65.65 cents in 2011.

Bowman said the court is waiting to see if Coleto Creek Power, a large tax base for Goliad County, decides to contest its valuation. The court probably won't vote on the rate until September.

The power company has until Saturday to contest the value in district court.
