East, Cuero hold final preseason tune-up

Both the Victoria East Titans and Cuero Gobblers are going through coaching transitions this seasons under Roland Gonzalez and Travis Reeve.
The two programs had one final preseason tune up against each other at Memorial Stadium on Friday.
"We have to utilize this display as a learning tool for us," Gonzalez said. "We have to go back and evaluate and make the corrections we need to make."
Three Titans turnovers lead to a pair of Gobbler touchdowns during the simulated half of football.
Gonzalez said that although you want to avoid mistakes, those miscues coming in a scrimmage have no bearing on a win-loss record until next week.
"Most of the mistakes we made tonight were mental mistakes," Gonzalez said. "You can't put the ball on the ground like we did tonight and expect to have any type of success."
East was able to mount a consistent offensive drive during their final series of the scrimmage.
Quarterback Cameron Schultz capped the final drive with an 18-yard touchdown with 44 seconds remaining.
"The last drive we had offensively was normally what we do in practice, we just didn't display it until the very end," Gonzalez said.
During the earlier part of the scrimmage, the roles were switched with the Titans coming up with drive ending takeaways.
The Titans first and second team offenses provided touchdown runs of 52 and 55-yards out to provide the only scoring for the non-simulated part of the scrimmage.
East scored from long distance, but during the non-simulated portion of the scrimmage, the offense had one drive stall in the red zone when Schultz ran for a 17-yard gain on fourth down and was stopped two yards shy of the end zone.
The Gobblers cashed in on their only trip to the red zone after East turned the ball over on a backward pass in the first quarter of the simulated game.
The Titans open the regular season next week at Gonzales, a district rival of Cuero.
East plays it's first District 30-4A game on Sept. 28 when it hosts Tuloso-Midaway. The Titans host cross-town rival Victoria West on Oct. 12 and close out the season against district favorite Calallen on Nov. 9.
Gonzalez takes over on the Titans sideline for Mickey Finley who retired in November.
Reeve returns to Cuero after two seasons as an assistant at San Antonio Churchill.
In 2011, the Gobblers missed the playoffs for the first time in 10 seasons.
