The numbers don't lie.
Refugio was so dominant in district play last season it outscored its seven opponents by a combined total of 492-29 and its closest margin of victory was 41 points.
Refugio has won 30 consecutive district games dating back to 2006.
The Bobcats enter this season ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 2A and are a prohibitive favorite to win the District 16-2A, Division II championship.
"The coaches in this district do a great job," said Refugio coach Jason Herring. "There are a lot of outstanding kids. But we've got some great athletes, especially for Class 2A and Region IV."
Herring said the district is likely to be more competitive with Taft dropping from Division I to replace Premont, which the Bobcats defeated 73-0.
"With Taft coming in and the other coaches we have," Herring said, "it should be a little tougher."
Herring expects Refugio's biggest test to come from Banquete, which finished third last season.
The Bobcats led the Badgers 27-14 at halftime before pulling away to win 55-14.
"Banquete has a really good outfit," Herring said. "They have almost every single kid returning from last season. Coach (Kevin) Hermes does a great job. Those kids play hard."
Refugio would welcome a more competitive district to help it prepare for the playoffs.
"There's no doubt it would be better for us," Herring said.
