A 49-year-old man was hit by a BMW while walking across Houston Highway about 7:20 p.m. Friday.

The BMW was traveling toward Victoria and changing lanes when it nicked the man, patrol officer Andrew Carrizales said.

He said the man was crossing the street from Extend A Suites and walking toward the Crossroads Veterinary Clinic, which is in the 3800 block of Houston Highway, when he was hit.

"He also may have been bending over to pick up some change," Carrizales said.

Carrizales said the man had a gash on his head. He said the man was conscious but disoriented when he was taken to a hospital.

Carrizales said the pedestrian was at fault.

"There's crosswalks," he said. "This is not a lighted area ... That's what's bad."

Officials would not release the names or ages of the pedestrian or the motorist. The investigation is ongoing.
