Trio named to all-star baseball team

Three area pitchers have been named to the 2013 South Texas Pre-Season High School Baseball All-Star Team.

Victoria East junior Michael Garcia and Calhoun senior Zach Cruz were selected for the large school (Class 4A-5A) team and Refugio junior Travis Quintanilla was chosen for the small school (3A-2A-1A-Private) team.

The players will be recognized during the Ninth Annual South Texas Winter Baseball Banquet on Wednesday, Jan. 23 in Corpus Christi.

The team was selected by a vote of 28 coaches and members of the media. The Advocate did not participate in the voting.

Garcia was 8-1 last season with a 3.06 ERA and had 54 strikeouts in 48 innings.

Cruz had a 6-5 record with a 1.96 ERA and had 64 strikeouts in 78.2 innings.

Quintanilla went 9-1 with a 1.01 ERA and had one save. He had 133 strikeouts in 69 innings.
