Victoria County Sheriff T. Michael O'Connor has not started the search for a new chief deputy.
Terry Simons came to Victoria in 2008 to serve as chief deputy, but died Nov. 7 of a heart attack at age 55.
"He was such a dynamic individual that, quite honestly, I think it would be an unfair situation to bring in someone so immediately because most people would compare," O'Connor said.
He said he would not accept applications until sometime after Jan. 1. In the meantime, the commanders and other employees at the sheriff's office are filling the void.
"The personnel at our office in an unspoken manner all knew and stepped up in place of the loss of a fellow officer, our chief. What is gratifying to me is that you don't have to say and order them to do that ... because that is the philosophy in law enforcement - that I have your back and you never have to ask," O'Connor said.
Simons came to Victoria after serving as chief deputy for the Val Verde County Sheriff's Office.
