Thumbs-up to the Starbucks baristas. They make my morning special. Way to go Steph, Josh, Melissa, Amanda and others. Also, thanks to the kind customers who pay for and wish others a blessed day!

Thumbs-up to all the Victoria Police Academy graduates! But thumbs-down to the Victoria Police Academy director for announcing and giving the valedictorian Award, then to say "in a few years, no one will remember who the valedictorian of this class was." I'm sure the young man who received the award will remember, as well as the cadets who worked hard to earn it as well!

Thumbs-up to Sheryl Murphy and the Victoria West High School students, staff members and parents who gathered at the school flagpole to pray for the victims of the shooting in Newtown, Conn., as well as the students at Cuero High School who gathered in remembrance. We are proud to see area people showing their support for others recovering from this tragedy.

Thumbs-up to Becky Mattocks of DeLeon Elementary School for her quick thinking, which saved a child from choking on a carrot stick.

Thumbs-up to the cooler temperatures in the Crossroads this week. It's finally starting to feel like Christmas.

Thumbs-up to Ted Riccio, project manager, and Barney Gulley, construction manager, for building La Petite Belle, a scale replica of French explorer Robert de La Salle's ship.

Thumbs-up to Bridey Greeson and her American Quarter Horse A Copper Spoonful for winning the amateur division world championship title at the National Cutting Horse Association World Finals.

Thumbs-down to the unfortunate death of a baleen whale on Matagorda Beach.

Thumbs-down to the unexpected death of author Jake Adam York, who was also the latest American Book Review speaker. We enjoyed his presentation and will miss his talent.

Thumbs-down to the swarming flocks of grackles that hang on power lines, causing a power outage on Dec. 17.
