Three people were injured Wednesday night in a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 87 in DeWitt County.

About 8 p.m., a Chevrolet Suburban traveling south and a Chevrolet pickup traveling north crashed about 200 feet from Anderson Avenue near Westhoff, said Department of Public Safety Trooper Aaron Frazier.

Craig Boone, 50, of Port Lavaca, the driver of the Suburban, and Jim Schad, 51, of San Antonio, the driver of the pickup, were taken by helicopter to University Hospital in San Antonio.

Nicholas Ohms, 37, of San Antonio, a passenger in the truck, was taken to DeTar Hospital Navarro.

As of Thursday afternoon, all were in stable condition, said the trooper. All the injured were wearing seat belts.

"That's what saved their lives," said Frazier.

The crash is under investigation.
