Friends of Matt Benefit set in Shiner

Dec. 30, 2012 at 6:30 a.m.

The Friends of Matt Benefit will be from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Jan. 6 at the Arthur Kaspar Pavilion in the Green Dickson Park in Shiner.

The benefit is in honor of 19-year-old Matthew Pohler, who was diagnosed Nov. 13 with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He has been a patient at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston ever since his diagnosis and will continue rounds of chemotherapy there to fight this disease.

The Friends of Matt Benefit will help defray the cost of these necessary and critical procedures.

The benefit begins at Comanche Stadium with a 5K Run/Walk and Kids' Fun Run sponsored by the Shiner Fellowship of Christian Athletes organization. Registration starts at 8 a.m. followed by the run at 9 a.m. For more information or to sign up, contact Courtney Welch at to receive an application.

Shiner High School National Honor Society is sponsoring a bake sale at the Arthur Kaspar Pavilion.

Also, Matt's friends and family and members of Troop 231's Cub Scouts will prepare a barbecue chicken lunch with plates consisting of half a chicken with all the trimmings. Tickets are available at area merchants now for $8 each.

After lunch, there will be a classic washer tournament. Participants are asked to sign up early, as the tournament will start once the brackets are full. Cash prizes will be awarded. Contact Julie Shroeder Boehm at 361-772-3032 for details.

A silent auction will begin at 10 a.m. in the pavilion's main hall. To donate an item, bring it to the pavilion until Friday evening. For more information about the auction, contact Dee Sandelovic at 361-293-1219.

The benefit closes with the sportsmen's raffle drawing at 5 p.m. Area merchants are selling 1,500 tickets that offer guided hunting and fishing trips and rifles.

Live music will be provided all day. Friends of Matt Benefit T-shirts will also be available for purchase.
