Calhoun High School closed early on Thursday afternoon after a water main break.

A water main at a McDonald's down the street from the high school broke at about 11 a.m. Thursday, cutting off water to the school, Principal Brandon Stiewig said.

There were about 1,200 students in school on Thursday. After learning it would take about five hours to fix the break, leaving the school without running water for the rest of the day, Stiewig said they decided to send the students home.

Students were allowed to use their cell phones to notify parents, and 11 buses were used to drive the students home when they were released from school at 1 p.m.

Stiewig said the students were at school long enough to get credit for attendance that day.

Calhoun County school district Superintendent Billy Wiggins said students will not have to make up the time they missed.

The water main was fixed by about 6 p.m. Thursday and school was back in session on Friday.
