Is it winter yet? We at the Victoria Art League are enjoying the mild weather.

Angie Banta Brown gave a great watercolor demonstration at our monthly meeting and followed that up with a three-day workshop which I took.

It had been almost 25 years since I painted my last watercolor and it was so good to get back into it.

That is what I and the Art League want to encourage anyone out there to do - try something new you have never done before or get back to that art medium you used to do like I did.

For those of you who have time during the day, join us from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays to work together to create in various media.

Other groups could start up in the evenings or on Saturdays for an opportunity for those who work days. We are very flexible and try to schedule activities to meet everyone's needs. That may not be possible, but we try.

We encourage you to join us in our noble quest.

Our Spring Art show will be March 24-April 7. This is a chance for all of you out there who have artwork you have been creating to enter and be judged along with other artists in your particular medium. This show is also open to youth from first to 12th grades.

Materials and information will be sent to all the schools in Victoria and the surrounding area so we hope to have great participation.

Call the Art League for more information or come by to pick up the rules and guidelines.

This month, Jim Feig will teach advanced digital photography from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on each Thursday of the month.

He will also offer a flash photography class from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11.

A beginning class will be offered in March, which my wife Susan and I will participate in.

Come see some of his work hanging in the art league gallery along with many other artists who belong to the Art League.

Sonny Timme and some of his students were highlighted as artists of the month in January with a reception before our last meeting. Their work will be hanging in the gallery until our next meeting.

Sonny continues to teach two classes on Wednesdays in various media. Here again, if you would like to get back into art, he is willing to help you do just that.

As for the children, Michele Evans continues her classes on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday in various media and Wednesdays in pottery. For more information, contact her at 361-572-8093.

I will teach beginning pottery classes on Tuesdays through March 5, and a class for experienced potters Thursdays through March 15. For information on these or other upcoming classes, or to let us know what other classes you would like to see offered, contact the Art League at 361-572-0825.

Our artist of the month for February is Fred James, who has developed his watercolor skills by taking numerous watercolor workshops from many renowned artists from around the country over the years.

We will have a special reception for him starting at 2 p.m. before our regular meeting on Feb. 12.

Mark Keathley, a very talented nationally recognized artist, will be our guest demonstrator and will demonstrate painting in oils.

You don't want to miss this one.

While you are enjoying the beautiful weather here in Victoria, come visit your local Art League, 905 S. Bridge St., a hidden gem in our wonderful city.
