Jaguars split two more with UT-Brownsville

BROWNSVILLE - The University of Houston-Victoria baseball team wrapped up its season-opening series by splitting a doubleheader with the University of Texas-Brownsville on Saturday at Scorpion Field.

The Jaguars won the first game 9-8 and dropped a 6-2 decision in the second game that was stopped in the bottom of the seventh inning because of lightning.

The Jaguars (2-2) and Scorpions (5-3) also split a doubleheader on Friday.

Juan Solis hit a three-run home run in UHV's five-run fifth inning as the Jaguars jumped out to a 9-1 lead in the opener.

Solis had five RBIs and John Longoria had two hits, including a double, and a RBI and scored three runs.

UTB rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, all of them unearned, against starter Tanner Hamilton.

Nick Huff came on to pick up the save.

Solis and Cory Hulsey, who scored two runs, each doubled for the Jaguars in the second game.

St. Joseph graduate Brayden Blanton pitched 1.1 innings for UHV in the second game.

He yielded one hit and had one strikeout.

UHV plays a doubleheader at Alvin Community College on Tuesday. The game will not count on the Jaguars' record per NAIA rules.
