Editor, the Advocate:
It is my understanding that for many years the Port of Victoria (Victoria County Navigation District) funded its operations with the revenues it received from it users. Then the District convinced the voters to fund improvements with a property tax on themselves. From the recent stories in the Advocate, it seems to have worked. Now comes the obvious question: when will the tax end? Personally, I doubt that it ever will. More than likely, it will continue as yet another subsidy to private enterprise to make them more profitable at the expense of homeowners.
It would be most interesting to see a detailed budget and financial report of this tax supported entity made available in the Victoria Public Library, as well as the VC/UHV Library ... maybe even an audit.
Perhaps then, a citizen could determine how well tax money is being spent. The Advocate seems to take the press releases of such entities at face value with little or no investigation or inspection. Before singing the praises based on tonnage figures, it might be beneficial to thoroughly inspect detailed revenue and expenditure reports.
