The name of the award fits Bill Lopez perfectly.
Lopez, president of the Yoakum Area Chamber of Commerce, was recently honored by Rotary International with the Service Above Self award at the Rotary District 5870 Foundation dinner in Austin.
"It's quite an honor," said Lopez, 79, who has been in the Yoakum Rotary Club for 14 years. "I enjoy serving and giving back to the community. That's why Rotary was a perfect fit for me."
Lopez received the award from Rotary International President Kalyan Banerjee and District Governor Suresh Pahwa on Feb. 11.
The award is the highest given to an individual Rotarian by Rotary International and only 150 recipients worldwide are selected each year from a membership of more than 2 million, according to a news release from Rotary International.
The award honors Rotarians who have demonstrated exemplary humanitarian service with an emphasis on personal volunteer efforts.
Only current and past district governors and current and past Rotary International directors are eligible to nominate candidates for the award.
Continuing his service with Rotary, Lopez and several other Yoakum Rotary members will travel to Peru in April with a district-wide contingent to deliver 500 wheelchairs.
