A man speeding in a pickup Friday night refused to stop for police and lead authorities on a high speed chase.

Patrol Officer Sam Eyre attempted to pull over a white Chevrolet pickup speeding down North Street about 11 p.m.

The driver of the pickup, James Bell, 63, of Victoria, began driving faster even before the officer's lights went on, starting a chase that reached a maximum speed of 80 mph, Eyre said.

The chase ended about five minutes later when Bell's pickup crashed into a tree in the 1500 block of Power Street.

During the chase, Eyre witnessed the driver throwing something out of the window, which officers later located among the trees and identified as an Advil bottle containing cocaine.

Bell was arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, felony evading arrest with a vehicle, felony tampering with evidence and felony possession of a controlled substance. He is being held at the Victoria County Jail.
