KARNES CITY - The state is widening Farm - to - Market Road 81 in Karnes County.

Continuing its efforts to combat highways damaged by oilfield truck traffic serving the Eagle Ford Shale, the Texas Department of Transportation recently contracted to widen the road between Runge and the Karnes-Goliad County line, according to a news release from the transportation agency.

The $1,216,000 state-funded contract was awarded to Brannan Paving, Inc., which began work on the two-lane highway Tuesday. The project will take about three months to complete, weather permitting.

The highway is 18-feet wide and will be expanded to 26-feet wide.

The expanded roadway will be built to accommodate typical vehicular traffic. Because of limited resources, the agency is unable to build the road to truck standards. Building the road to handle heavy truck traffic would require rebuilding the entire roadway from the base up and funding is not available to achieve that, according to the news release.
