A 34-year-old man was struck by a pickup on U.S. Business Highway 77 early Monday morning.

The Corpus Christi resident and two others were walking down the road after their car ran out of gas about 6 a.m. A driver stopped and offered them a ride, and they were getting into the vehicle when the man stepped out in front of a pickup. The truck was estimated to be traveling at about 50 mph when it struck the man.

The driver of the truck stopped to offer assistance.

Fire Department responded to the call and arrived on the scene at about 6:20 a.m., Victoria Fire Department Battalion Chief Roger Hempel said. The man was critically injured and was air-lifted to San Antonio, Hempel said.
