The Victoria Business and Education Coalition is honoring mentors who donate their time to work with students in Victoria schools as part of the Sure B.E.T program.

First up is Lisa Hernandez, a 49-year-old employee at First Victoria National Bank, who mentors a student at Hopkins Elementary. She has been mentoring for five years.

What do you enjoy most about mentoring?

The ability to make an impact on this one child, and how 30 minutes does make a big difference and to see their improvement in reading, vocabulary, etc.

What have you learned by the student, educational system and more that has enlightened you?

My students have shown me that they do want to do well in their studies, and they want to please their teachers and parents. This program is working for many if only the government will give back the school system the freedom to teach subjects and not just information that will be tested on.
